How it works

1

Enter your review counts

Type how many reviews you have at each star level, from 5 down to 1.

2

Weight each level

Every count is multiplied by its star value: 5, 4, 3, 2 or 1.

3

Divide by the total

The sum of all weighted values is divided by the total number of reviews.

4

Read your average

The result is your live star rating, out of 5, updated as you type.

What is a star rating calculator?

A star rating calculator turns your review counts into a single weighted average, the same number the App Store and Google Play display beside your app. Instead of a simple headcount, each review is weighted by its star value β€” a 5-star review adds 5 points, a 1-star review adds just 1 β€” and the total is divided by the number of reviews. That is why 100 five-star reviews and 100 one-star reviews average to 3.0, not a flattering number.

Understanding the weighted math shows you exactly how many 5-star reviews it takes to move the needle. Once you have a large base of reviews, a single new rating barely shifts the average, so early ratings matter far more than later ones. Use this calculator to model different scenarios, set realistic targets, and see how many happy users you need to recover from a run of bad reviews.

Frequently asked questions

How is the average star rating calculated?
Multiply each review count by its star value, add the results together, then divide by the total number of reviews. For example, (5Γ—80 + 4Γ—15 + 3Γ—3 + 2Γ—1 + 1Γ—1) Γ· 100 = 4.71.
How many 5-star reviews do I need to raise my average?
It depends on how many reviews you already have. With a small base, a few 5-star reviews move the average quickly; with thousands of reviews, each new one shifts it only slightly. Use the calculator to test your exact numbers.
Is this the same rating the App Store and Google Play show?
Yes β€” both stores display a weighted average across all star levels. Note that stores may weight recent reviews or a specific version differently, so your live store rating can vary slightly.
Does one bad review really hurt my rating?
Early on, yes. When you have only a handful of reviews, a single 1-star rating can drop your average noticeably. As your total grows, individual reviews carry much less weight.
