What 2026 Taught Me About Building With AI (and What's Coming Next)

A year of building with AI, honestly reviewed β€” what actually changed, why "vibe coding" is half a lie, the skill that got scarce, and what's coming next in AI development.

I spent 2026 building with AI β€” not tinkering, building: a real product (Reverze), shipped features, real users, real mistakes. A year in, the loudest lessons weren't the ones the hype promised. So before the year turns, here's the honest reflection: what actually changed about building when AI became the co-worker, the parts that were oversold, and where I think this goes next.

No predictions I can't defend. Just what a year of doing it taught me.

Lesson 1: AI is leverage on skill, not a substitute for it

This is the one I keep relearning. Every time I handed AI a task I couldn't do myself, I got confident-looking output I couldn't evaluate β€” and it usually hid a mistake. Every time I handed it a task I could do, it made me three times faster. AI multiplied what I already had; it didn't manufacture what I lacked. The people who thrived in 2026 weren't the ones who knew nothing and let AI do everything. They were skilled people who bolted a jet engine onto their existing competence.

Lesson 2: The bottleneck moved from doing to deciding

For years the constraint on building was production β€” typing the code, making the screenshots, writing the copy. In 2026 that constraint mostly dissolved, and a new one surfaced immediately: I could now generate far more than I could thoughtfully review. The job quietly changed from "make the thing" to "decide whether the thing is right." My days filled with judgment calls, not keystrokes. That's a better job. It's also a harder one to fake.

Lesson 3: "Vibe coding" is half a lie (and half the future)

Let me be blunt about the year's favorite phrase. Vibe coding β€” describing what you want and letting AI build it β€” is real, and it's genuinely magical for the first 80%. It's also where more shipped garbage came from than anything else in 2026. The demos always work; the demos are the lie. What they don't show is the part where the plausible-looking output breaks on the case nobody described, and you need to actually understand the system to catch it.

The honest version: vibe your way to a draft, then engineer your way to a product. The vibe gets you started. The judgment gets you shipped. Anyone selling you the first half without the second is selling you a demo, not a business.

Lesson 4: Taste became the scarce skill

When everyone can generate, the bottleneck is knowing what's good. 2026 flooded the world with competent, forgettable, machine-made everything β€” code, copy, images, apps. The thing that stood out wasn't more output; it was taste β€” the judgment to pick the right direction, kill the generic one, and know when "technically works" isn't good enough. Lesson 5: The boring 80% got automated; the human 20% got more valuable

Across everything I built, the pattern was identical. AI ate the repetitive, known-but-tedious 80% β€” boilerplate, resizing, first drafts, the third near-identical thing. And the remaining 20% β€” the architecture, the taste, the "should this even exist" β€” didn't shrink. It got more important, because it was now the only part that needed a human. What's coming next

I'll keep the crystal ball small and honest. The clear direction is more autonomy β€” agents that don't just answer but do, that run longer, chain more steps, own more of the loop. That's real and it's accelerating. But I don't think it changes the core lesson; I think it sharpens it. The more the machine can do unsupervised, the more everything rides on the human setting the direction and catching the plausible-but-wrong. Autonomy raises the ceiling on output and raises the stakes on judgment at the same time.

So my bet for the next stretch is boring and, I think, correct: the winners won't be the people who let AI do the most. They'll be the ones with the taste to aim it and the judgment to check it. Production is commoditizing. Direction is not.

If 2026 taught me a single thing about building with AI, it's this: the machine got extraordinary at the how, and made the what and the whether the entire job. Get good at those. That's what I'm carrying into next year, and it's the thread running through everything I'll write next on the blog.
